Hello, all! Before the launch of the Sydney Rye Kindle World I wanted to let you all get to know about the authors contributing to the launch. So every week I’ll be publishing a post with an interview with one of these talented authors. And don’t forget to sign up for The Sydney Rye Kindle World Readers’ Group to Receive 8 free books from some of the most talented authors out there! Now onto the first of these wonders…
Julie is a writer, a chemistry teacher, a reviewer, a Star Wars fan, and a tea/coffee drinker. She also sells Legos for a friend. Over the past year, she’s had the chance to build more sets than she’s ever done in my entire life. (It’s awesome.) She lives in New Jersey.
Please introduce us to you and your body of work.
Hi. My name is Julie C. Gilbert. I’m a chemistry teacher by day and a fiction writer by night, weekend, and random time I can steal. I have books in several genres. Devya’s Children focuses on genetically altered children and their Gifts and general life struggles. Heartfelt Cases follows a pair of FBI agents and 3 of their tough, personal cases. Defining Moments is a series of novellas set in Toby Neal’s Lei Crime series. The first one features a young Michael Stevens and answers the question of why he’d want to become a cop. The next three feature FBI Special Agent Marcella Scott and 3 of her crazy cases. I also have unpublished fantasy and science fiction works.
How did you come to be involved in the SRKW? How do you know Emily?
Emily and I were both launch authors for the Lei Crime Kindle World. At the time, all the launch authors were trying to help each other as much as possible. I found I liked playing with the back cover copies, so I was helping to shape those for anybody who asked. Later, Emily asked if I’d look over one for her Sydney Rye series. Months later, she asked if I’d like to help launch the Sydney Rye Kindle World. Of course, I said “yes,” because I was super impressed with how awesome her Lei Crime KW story turned out.
What genre do you write in? Why do you enjoy that genre?
Devya’s Children is Young Adult Science Fiction. Heartfelt Cases is Christian Mystery. The Defining Moments series is either Mystery/Suspense or Mystery/ Thriller.
I love that with any sort of science fiction you can do just about anything as long as it’s plausible. This series allows me to explore the possibilities yet also focus on the characters. I enjoy being able to deal with real world issues in my own way. I guess I’m a wee bit of a control freak that way.
Mysteries are always fun to put together. A lot of my early mysteries concentrated on kidnapping. I’m not entirely sure where the obsession came from, but I find people’s motivations for doing desperate things fascinating.
I’m just starting to explore thriller as a genre. It’s still cool, but I tend to gravitate toward personal problems rather than high stakes mental games.
Fantasy’s fun too for escapism purposes. It’s nice to be able to occasionally decapitate a zombie here and there. Shapeshifters are also intriguing. So, of course, both make it into my version of fantasy.
Which character or characters do you plan to focus on in your Sydney Rye Kindle World contribution? What drew you to that character?
I think I’ll probably focus on Sydney Rye herself. Not sure when the story will be set, but I like the transformation profess of this normal woman into a bad-guy whooping vigilante we get later in the series.
Will your contribution to the world include one of your own characters? Please introduce us to them and your own world.
Yes. I’d like you to meet Nadia Ayers. See the cover for Nadia’s Tears for a picture reference. The earlier Kindle Worlds I’ve been involved with didn’t have the luxury of integrating characters from my own works, so this should be interesting.
Nadia is a minder, which means her brain grows and develops very quickly. Her Gift also includes telepathy. She’s surprisingly a pretty sweet and normal teenager given the lot she’s been dealt.
Devya’s Children the series focuses on a cast of about 8 genetically altered children who have different Gifts. Jillian can shape dreams, Malia can manipulate emotions, and Varick’s been trained and augmented to be the perfect soldier. Each book focuses on a different child and their Gifts.
Because of her personal situation, Nadia’s very conscious of human trafficking and modern day slavery. This is a passion she shares with Sydney Rye. I imagine they’d get along fabulously.
Is there anything else you’d like Emily’s readers to know?
Fun fact: Ashlynn’s Dreams will soon be available in Chinese, but I definitely won’t be able to read it. I look forward to co-mingling the Devya’s Children characters and the Sydney Rye universe. Here’s to adventure.
Twelve-year-old Jillian Blairington is just an ordinary girl — bright, brave, and sometimes a bit too headstrong for her own good. She never thought she was particularly special or different than anybody else.
She was wrong.
Everything changes the day she and her babysitter, Danielle, are kidnapped and taken to a secret scientific facility. There Jillian learns she has a new name, Ashlynn, and a strange connection to the other children at the lab. They each have powerful abilities, Gifts that Jillian doesn’t quite understand. As if that wasn’t enough to absorb, Jillian discovers she has a Gift of her own — the power to enter other people’s dreams.
Jillian’s task seems simple enough: the scientists want her to use her ability to find another Gifted child who has disappeared. But the longer Jillian stays in the facility, the more she realizes that nothing is as it seems … and everybody has secrets. Besides, the boy’s life is not the only one at stake. The scientists will stop at nothing to force Jillian’s cooperation, even if that means threatening Danielle.
Jillian knows they have to get free. But after all they’ve seen, will they ever truly escape?
Jillian must enter Nadia’s dreams to wake her from a mysterious coma. In Nadia’s dreams, Jillian meets several versions of her sister, including the elegant Queen Elena, fierce Naidine, and heartbroken Nadie. Meanwhile, Danielle must save her friend Christy from making choices that could get them both killed.
