This is the first book I've read from a well-written, interesting new series. I like the protagonist enough to hope she overcomes her alcoholism and learns to eat good food. And trains her dog. She should also learn some kind of self defense martial art and how to shoot guns if she is going to experience such a violent existence. And I am not a big fan of locating the first book in NYC; I don't understand the fascination folks have with that place. I hope Sydney finds a better city in which to be a P.I.
All that being said, I look forward to reading the rest of the series, if only to see how the main character develops.

This first book in the Sydney Rye Mysteries did a phenomenal job of showing us a young woman's journey from Joy Humbolt that walks dogs in New York to Sydney Rye, a woman hell bent on vigilante justice. Saddle up because this adventure is just getting started!

She does a superb job of building the characters, so that it flows from chapter to chapter effortlessly. I loved this book. I was hooked on page 1 and HAD to finish the book as fast as I could. If I put it down, I couldn't wait to get back to the story! The author has a way of drawing you into the story so that you can't wait to read what happens next. Joy is just an average person, until she's not. A search for a new job, any job, leads her into a life changing moment and a mystery she just can't leave alone. This book contains violence, sex and swearing, but it's not overdone and, in my opinion, fits the story and the people in it. Can't wait to read the next volume!
