These are things I used to do but don’t anymore—because I like to learn my lessons.
Mistake number 1:
Not warning people that even though my series has a dog in it, that doesn’t mean it’s cozy. I used to get a lot of hate because people went into my gritty, honestly f***ed up books, assuming they were going to be cute little mysteries and then they got BDSM dungeons and beheadings and were like WTF.
Their hate rained down upon me because I used f*** a lot, and my female main character has sex out of wedlock. Yes. The word wedlock was used in a one star review. Someone said it was the filthiest language they’d ever read in print. To which I was like: Wow, your expectations were not met, and you need to get out more.
So now I put a P.S. on basically every post and book description warning people about the “foul language”, unholy sex, and 🏳️🌈 characters, which doesn’t actually keep the nutcases at bay, but now they only have themselves to blame.
Mistake number 2:
Not eviscerating trolls. For a long time I just blocked people, I set up warnings. I attempted to get the people who wouldn’t like me or my books to stay the f*** away from me and my readers, but then one day I was like: Omg! F*** this ignorant asshat, and I just destroyed a troll.
I was mean. So f***ing mean. And it felt good. So f***ing good.
Not only that, it also sold books because my readers are blood thirsty f***ers who are sick of being the bigger person just like me. So now one of my content buckets is screen shots of me f***ing up strangers who f***ed around and found out. Haters have become my favorite breakfast food.
Mistake number 3:
Not ranting my face off. For years I did not rant on the internet about how f***ed up the world is—aka the reason I write my f***ed up books in the first place. I ranted to friends, obviously. But once I started sharing this side of myself online I sold a lot more books and got a lot more hate. Which is a win-win because, as we already discussed, haters are my favorite breakfast food. 😈
Sydney Rye and her dog, Blue, exact justice with a vengeance. The dog doesn’t die, but the bad guys do. And it’s cathartic AF.
