In late August and don’t plan to spend any significant amount of time there for several years…if ever again.
Like the vast majority of Americans, I am descended from immigrants. People who left their homeland searching for safety, opportunity, and a better life for their children. Following in that tradition, I’ve left the land of my birth.
I’m not going to raise my kids in a country run by fascist f***s. I’m an Ashkenazi Jew, and most of my grandfather’s family was lost in WW2.
His father, my great grandfather, came to the US before the war, and he begged the rest of his family to join him, but they all felt assured they were safe.
I won’t make the mistake of trusting fascists. Not with my life or my children’s lives.
For the record, I loved where I lived. I loved my life. And while I am also loving my new life, it sucks to be fleeing fascist. But at least I have the privilege to flee, when so many don’t.
I don’t think the United States is safe for, honestly, anyone but ultra wealthy, white, Christian men.
Watching this train wreck from abroad is easier than watching it in the States because where I am now, I don’t have to worry about my kids getting shot at their school, about an accidental pregnancy ending my life, about masked men kidnapping people off the streets where I walk my dog.
Not being in it makes it easier to see. Safer to fight.
I’ve been writing about abuse of power since I first created Sydney Rye. The series is more popular than ever because it’s more prescient than ever—even though the first book came out almost twenty years ago.
The 19th book, Feral Vengeance, released at the end of January 2026. It explores the terrifying dangers of AI and oligarchy. The research I did kept me up at night. It reminded me that nowhere will be safe if we let this administration and the billionaires supporting it continue to consolidate power.
Everyone has a role to play in this revolution. It’s not left vs right, it’s a billionaire fascist vs the rest of us. They’ve managed to convince about 30% of Americans to side with them…that because they are good at hoarding resources they should be trusted with the future of our planet.
I know everyone on this list can see through that obvious con. That all of you want to do your part to steer us away from the cliff Trump and his cronies are barreling us toward.
You do have power. Maybe you post on social media, maybe you talk to neighbors, maybe you attend protests. Or maybe you do something totally different. Your fight doesn’t have to be the same as my fight. As long as we are both fighting. As long as we both remember that we, the people, have the power, we can win.
The one thing we can’t do is give up. Part of the plan is compounding your feelings of overwhelm.
Do what you have to do, what you can do, to not let the tsunami of horrors numb you.
I left the nation of my birth. I read fiction every day. Write my books. Work with activism groups I believe in. Walk my dog. I drink wine, laugh, play, and practice gratitude. They can’t win if we don’t let them.
They have billions of dollars and an evil plan. We have each other.
