That I’m a full-time fiction author. And they said, “That sounds like such a romantic life.“
I paused for a moment because it reminded me that, yes, it is a romantic life. And one of the reasons I wanted to be a full-time fiction author is because it seemed like a romantic life.
To be clear, I don’t write romances—I write feminist vigilante fiction.
But the image I saw of myself when fantasizing about being a full-time author was sitting at a café in some foreign land tapping away on my laptop.
This fall, while living in Italy, I spent a lot of time doing just that…with the added bonus of my dog at my feet.
In addition, I’m writing this from a beach chair on the island of Bali, actually dictating it into my phone. Of course, back when I imagined being a full-time fiction author, smart phones didn’t exist. They had buttons and no Internet connection.
While the tools I use to create my work are very different from writers of the past, at the end of the day the job is the same.
To absorb the world and then write something that captures it. To make people feel. To give them hope. Remind them of the beauty from sorrow. Make them laugh and cry. It’s intimate. The relationship between a writer and their reader. It is, in fact, very romantic.
