About being an author is how deeply intimate, and yet foreign, the writing process is. Every author has returned to their manuscript shocked by the words and phrases they find there.

While writing, my character dropped a truth I’d never fully recognized until my fingers dictated her words.

She gives me an almost imperceptible nod, a communication passing between us—the kind that women often share in public. A small nod to our shared vulnerability and power. An acknowledgment that we are creators. And there is nothing more difficult or dangerous than bringing something new into the world.

All women have shared that nod that says: “yeah, we are both here and are both women.” I’d never consciously thought about what that nod meant before. But if you’d asked me, I would have said it had more to do with the predators all around us.

This nod is ubiquitous on the subway late at night, in crowded male-dominated spaces; hell, it happens in the supermarket. It’s a nod to our shared reality as women.

I did not realize, until I wrote the passage above, that the reason we are scary—the reason we are dangerous—is because we can create new life. And newness is scary. Newness is dangerous.

History shows us that bringing a new reality forward can be deadly. How many heroes of progress are assassinated? Too many. And it’s because humans are inherently terrified of change. Our subconscious wants nothing to change because we are alive NOW and if we change something that could lead to us not being alive.

This is why changing habits, even ones that may be bad for us, is so hard. Our subconscious’s resistance to change is why we get stuck in situations our conscious mind can’t stand. Our lizard brain is in there being like: NOBODY DO ANYTHING—WE ARE ALIVE. IF THINGS CHANGE, WE WILL DIE.

So new life…is there any bigger change than new life? Where once there was nothing, we create an entire new human, with their own subconscious, their own fears and dreams.

No wonder men are terrified of us. No wonder we are terrified of ourselves.

Paperbacks purchased directly from me are currently estimating into January for delivery. Because we ship via economy, directly from the printers, they are experiencing longer delays with the holidays.

For my Australian readers, we are seeing shipping times averaging at least 3 months–we have no idea why, it’s an issue with the AU printers. Canadians, we are, of course, experiencing delivery delays due to the postal strike.

P.S. I promise the dog doesn’t die…but I make no assurances about anyone else. 😈

P.P.S. You should unfollow me now if you have issues with "strong" language, sex out of wedlock, or LGBTQ+ characters. 👈 Top 3 things my one-star reviews complain about.
