I wasn’t enough of a feminist because my fictional character, Sydney Rye, finds comfort in men’s arms.
But here’s the thing, feminism is not about women being islands of strength. It’s about women being equal. It’s about women doing what we want without harsh judgment of what we are supposed to be. 👀
I’ve found comfort in the arms of men, women, the paws of dogs, and the backs of horses.
I’m a woman. Not a pillar of isolated strength.
In fact, much of my strength comes from my ability to build community—see the tens of thousands of people who follow me on social media and are on my email list. The million-plus people who have downloaded my books. The nurturing relationships in my private life. My devoted dog and all the horses at the barn who know I’m not there to force them to perform but to build a partnership.
My character Sydney Rye builds community as well—she is ride or die, she offers comfort and accepts it. She is powerful not because she is alone but because she is loyal, brave, and ready to throw down for justice and the ones she loves.
I’m a feminist because I know my worth. Not because I don’t take comfort from men. I’ll take comfort where I can get it in this messed up world. Resting my head on my husband’s shoulder is always a good place to start.
Feminism doesn’t mean hating men. It means recognizing that they are our equals and we are theirs.
It’s so much simpler than people make it out to be.
