We are traveling the coast of Bali right now...

and as happens, when very lucky, we’ve been adopted by a dog.
She followed us home last night from dinner, trotting happily along as I warned my kids not to touch her—even as I was desperate to pet her myself.
Unfortunately, rabies is a real issue in Bali, and any bite means multiple shots. So even though Beanie—the name my children gave her—appears to be rabies free and friendly, it’s best not to touch.
When we got back to our hotel, Beanie ducked down to the beach, and I figured that was the last we’d see of her. Then my husband returned from organizing our excursion for the morning, and my kids excitedly told him about Beanie.
My daughter yelled out into the darkness. “Beanie, come back!”
And come back she did, loping happily up the path to our patio, ears tipped to the side in supplication. I am safe, her sweet ears told us.
But we forced the kids to go to bed without feeding her—in part because we had nothing to offer, but also because it’s not a good idea to feed random dogs. I’m sure the hotel would not appreciate our largess.
The next morning, we woke up before sunrise to go snorkeling, and once again my daughter yelled out into the darkness for Beanie, and once again she came. Trotting up our walkway as if she lived here.
Beanie followed my husband and daughter to the beach for their snorkeling trip, while I wrote on the patio, my son still sleeping.
When they returned two hours later, Beanie trailed behind. The dog had met them as they splashed back onto the beach.
She watched my daughter swim in the pool. And is now curled up next to the sun chair where she’s reading. We’ll have to find some way to thank Beanie for adopting us.
Breakfast is being delivered, and I did get an extra side of bacon…
