Is something I hear a lot. It’s ridiculous for many reasons…number one being: Who the fuck said anyone but me gets to decide what goes into my work? It’s MY work. I hate to be the asshole over here pulling rank, but I’m the only me creating my work so I am, as Bush Jr would say, the decider.
And number two: Why the fuck shouldn’t I put politics into my work? Am I only supposed to write about flowers and puppies? Spoiler alert: Every book you’ve ever read was about politics—it was the author’s subconscious wrestling with the collective.
Every book is about relationships, and that’s what politics is—our relationship with each other. And besides, it’s my duty as a citizen to talk about and engage in politics. We can’t leave the most important decisions to assholes just because they say it’s “their” work.
Ladies and gentlemen, theys and gays...
Politics is all of our work. It’s the being a part of a democracy thing they don’t teach you in school. You don’t need an opinion on everything, but if you don’t pull your head out of the sand then you might miss the part where fascism takes over and it becomes illegal for me to put politics into my work.
Even if you don’t agree with me, you’ll probably agree that’s not a society you want to live in.
So if you’re not in denial about politics being super important, and also like to see female characters and their dogs fuck shit up, then you should check out my Sydney Rye Mysteries.
Sydney Rye and her dog, Blue, exact justice with a vengeance. The dog doesn’t die, but the bad guys do. And it’s awesome.
