Experiencing a full range of emotions, including hate and anger. The idea that there is too much negativity in the world and on social media specifically is interesting. I wonder what the actual percentages are…apparently as soon as women make up 33% of a room, men think they are the majority.
Anger and hate are invalidated for a lot of reasons. At worst, they are dangerous. At best, they are not “helpful”. Bringing your hate and anger to the table won’t get anything done, and could get someone hurt.
But social media is not the table. It’s the town square, in essence. Look, I’m not saying we should allow hate speech on social media sites. I’m not interested in hearing what white supremacists have to say.
They have a right to free speech and can get a permit and head on down to the actual town square if they want to. They can talk to each other about it. I don’t want to hear it, and private companies have every right to tell them no, you can’t say that 💩 here.
I’m careful with my anger because I recognize its power to move me and other people. I only express it in very specific ways under specific circumstances.
I write books—some might call them angry feminist action books. I would not get into a debate with those people.
