I run ads for my books

I run ads for my books

Because I am a businesswoman supporting my family with my book sales.

The ad I’ve run the longest is super simple. It’s the opening of 𝘜𝘯𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘥, the first book in my Sydney Rye Mysteries. I use the first 400 words with a link to buy at the end.

Do you know how many people get mad at me because they think it’s real until they get to the “sales pitch”? 🤯

𝗔 𝘁𝗼𝗻.

Mind you, my ads, like all ads on Facebook, are marked as “Sponsored”, and the headline of the ad says something like “Pay What You Want”… so unless people assume I’m trying to sell them a dog for their chosen price while also admitting to murder…detectives these folks are not.

Now look, there are lots of people who think it’s real for the first few lines and figure out by the time cold-blooded revenge comes up that they are reading fiction. They are excited they found a book that drew them in so quickly and with such skill—these readers are hungry to read more. But a subset of people out there consider it “trickery” to put the opening of a book on Facebook.

They are SO mad they feel the need to comment on the ad about what a horrible person I am. Like, they could have kept scrolling, but their red hot rage made them comment. 🥴

Now look, I don’t think these people are the worst humanity has to offer.

I get lots of bigots in my comments section too. People pissed that I put LGBTQ+ characters in my books because I’m promoting an “agenda”. Which I am—the “agenda” of acknowledging that the LGBTQ+ community exists.

To me, it’s more like a fact than an agenda, but that’s not the point of this post.

I also get people who think I must be a terrible writer because only a poor writer needs to use “strong” language. And of course, there are people who are horrified fictional characters are having sex out of wedlock. 😱

But I actually understand these folks—they have some deep, dark, messed up part of their brain that is mixed up with shame and hate and just nastiness. They didn’t come out of the womb judging women for their sexual choices or upset that other people don’t like to have sex the same way as them. No baby ever blushed at “strong” language. Let alone tried to shame an author on social media.

We all have prejudices in us, we live under white supremacist patriarchy no matter how “woke” we are, so we all have a degree of racism, homophobia, sexism, ableism, the list goes on. I get the bigots and the judgers. I don’t agree with them, obviously, but I can see where they come from.

The fact that these folks feel the need to comment on my ads does not go well for them, by the way. I am only human and eviscerating bigots is fun for me. My pen is my sword, and I am not afraid to use it. 😈

But the people angry they can’t tell fact from fiction… I don’t get them. At all. If you’re so unaware of reality that you thought the opening of my book was a true story and then seconds later you got to the part where I link to buy the book and you realize your first impression was incorrect and that enrages you? That I do not get. And I believe a chill pill is in order. 😂

If you want to read the opening of Unleashed—the trickery I'm spreading far and wide with my nefarious advertisements—you can read or listen to it here.
