I spend a ton of time thinking about that question. It’s an occupational hazard since I spend so much time pretending to be someone I’m not. Writing fiction is basically playing pretend as an adult...alone...now it's starting to sound sad. 😂

But it's not! It's challenging, fascinating, and the perfect excuse to spend lots of time thinking about questions like...W𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲?

I read a lot of memoirs, and I interview people, and I try to put myself in their shoes.

When I’m figuring out a character, I don’t look in the mirror at them, I look down at their feet. I need to figure out where they stand. What they care about—not their reflection, but their truth. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴.

When I look at where Sydney Rye stands, I see she can’t help but exact justice with a vengeance. It is the essence of her nature. Love and anger drive Sydney. Love for the underdog and anger at anyone who uses their power to oppress rather than uplift.
