I spend a ton of time thinking about that question. Itโs an occupational hazard since I spend so much time pretending to be someone Iโm not. Writing fiction is basically playing pretend as an adult...alone...now it's starting to sound sad. ๐
But it's not! It's challenging, fascinating, and the perfect excuse to spend lots of time thinking about questions like...W๐ต๐ ๐ฑ๐ผ ๐๐ผ๐ ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐น๐ถ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ผ๐ ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐น๐ถ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ?
I read a lot of memoirs, and I interview people, and I try to put myself in their shoes.
When Iโm figuring out a character, I donโt look in the mirror at them, I look down at their feet. I need to figure out where they stand. What they care aboutโnot their reflection, but their truth. ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฟ๐๐๐ต ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ ๐ฒ๐น๐ฒ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ฎ๐น ๐ป๐ฎ๐๐๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ถ๐ฟ ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ถ๐ป๐ด.
When I look at where Sydney Rye stands, I see she canโt help but exact justice with a vengeance. It is the essence of her nature. Love and anger drive Sydney. Love for the underdog and anger at anyone who uses their power to oppress rather than uplift.
