Chief Twit believes empathy is ruining the Western World.

Chief Twit believes empathy is ruining the Western World.

As someone who isn’t a piece of sh*t, I find it deeply concerning a man with that worldview holds so much power.

If the problem with society is that we care about each other—that we’re not entirely self-centered—then what kind of society is he trying to build?

Because if you believe the only thing that matters is yourself—not your community, not even the people closest to you—you’ve lost the thread. Communities are made up of individuals, and individuals are diverse. Even siblings raised by the same parents can experience the world completely differently.

If you can’t have empathy for your own siblings, for the people around you, you’re what we call an a**hole.

If you’re only thinking about yourself, you’re a bad person. Duh.

As a novelist, I spend a lot of time imagining what it’s like to be other people. I’ve written characters who struggle with empathy. Most villains do. Because to hurt innocent people, you have to first refuse to acknowledge their humanity. That’s what makes villains so terrifying—their total lack of empathy.

And that’s also why we love morally gray villains. Ones who hurt bad people. We get their anger. We can empathize with their need for justice. That’s what vigilante fiction is about: imagining what it would be like to take on the people who cause harm without a second thought.

Empathy isn’t ruining the Western World. People without empathy are ruining the f*cking planet.

If you follow me—and you’re not just here to troll—it’s probably because you have empathy. Maybe because you’re a reader. Fiction builds empathy. It’s been proven.

So go ahead. Build your empathy. Get your catharsis. Start the Sydney Rye Mysteries today.
