Do you know what an Id list is?

I learned about this recently, and just LOVE it.
Basically, it's all the stuff your Idโthe lizard brain part of your brainโloves in a book. This can be tropes, types of characters, locations, details, anything in a book that gives you that FEELING.
The phrase was coined by Dr. Jennifer Barnes, a psychologist, cognitive scientist, and YA romance author. She gave a talk on it at a conference years ago, and when I heard the recording it made so much sense.
I started an Id list, and it's FUN to keep track. One of mine is conversations on the beach that turn into a fight where they have to yell over the sound of the surf and wind. I also love intimate fights in tight spaces that turn into kisses. Really any fight in a tight space no matter how it ends I'm a fan of. ๐
I also LOVE the moment when the bad guy thinks they've won, but the hero looks up from under their brow, and that spark is there, and you just KNOW the baddie is about to go DOWN.
Anytime a dog is funny, brave, sweet...okay fine, anytime there is a dog who feels alive, my Id is purring like a kitten. ๐น
Whenever I'm having trouble getting into a scene, I grab my Id listโwhich I keep on my phoneโand pull a few things off it to pop into the scene.
