Was: “Needs a muzzle”.
I was like. Oh, I have f***ing arrived.
I’ve been publishing for 15 years and have written 30 books.
There are tens of thousands of reviews on my work. To be clear, I don’t read my one star reviews anymore. I’m not into masochism.
But, back when I was getting started, I read all my reviews. And since my books have a dog in them, and I didn’t really understand how to market them, I was getting a lot of cozy mystery readers.
I was not meeting those readers' expectations, to put it mildly. They were showing up at my dark and, honestly, deranged doorstep expecting a cute dog and gentle crimes.
Cozy readers do not want books that attack the status quo, call out the hypocrisy of Christian nationalism, have LGBTQ+ characters, violence, and a bunch of things I can’t say on social media without being suppressed.
In short, cozy readers do not want my books.
Because my books are the embodiment of my rage at how women have been muzzled for most of human history.
I write dark, gritty vigilante thrillers because I’m deeply disgusted by abusive men being rewarded, protected, and given power.
So the fact that someone thought my books needed to be muzzled proved to me I was doing exactly what I’d set out to do. You don’t need to muzzle a dog unless they bite.
My books are feral, unhinged, and cathartic. They’d chew through a muzzle. And that’s how I—and my five star reviews—like them.
