That my books are feminist. It means that all my characters are as real as I can make them—as human as my imagination and subconscious allow.
Women and men both experience emotions. Love, sorrow, pain, an aching need for justice.
Sydney Rye is a deeply flawed woman, and that in itself is feminist. The idea that a woman who isn’t perfect deserves our focus, our attention. Even our admiration.
My books are feminist because I’m a feminist. Because I believe that our genders do not have to define our roles, our skills, or our passions. I believe all genders are of equal value. All people.
That doesn’t mean my books are utopian visions of a world with unprecedented equality. Or that my characters are not misogynist–we all have biases.
It also doesn’t mean my books are all about love and compassion. Abuse of power pisses me off—no matter the gender of the abuser. But if we’re being honest, more men abuse power. More men have power.
So I write books where gender defines my characters as much as their hearts, their faiths, or their fates.
People like to claim feminism is a problem. I think bigotry is a problem. I think hierarchy is a problem. I think abusing power is a problem.
I write violent feminist vigilante fiction because that’s what helps me deal with the chaos of reality. The f****ry of it all.
