I’ve been living in Bali and working on launching the latest Sydney Rye Mystery, Feral Vengeance.
And obviously following the horrifying developments in Minnesota, which at once feel far away and not nearly far enough. They belong in the pages of a fiction book, not in the news.
I left the United States because I needed a break from a country that would elect a man like Trump, twice. Once could be a mistake. Twice was a choice. A choice our country makes over and over again. To be ignorant, cruel, racist, misogynist, and violent.
I knew this sh** show was going to happen because I have pattern recognition and a working knowledge of history. Also, Project 2025 was there for all of us to read.
It’s ugly. It’s depressing. It was a choice that our country made. And sure, some people didn’t realize this would happen, but I don’t forgive them for their ignorance.
As a citizen, as a human, as not a piece of s***, you have to think about your fellow citizens, and you have to either choose not to vote because you’re not informed enough or get informed.
I do believe there are more of us than them. Trump and his policies are unpopular which makes what he is trying to do much harder. His age and failing health means he will die sooner rather than later, but this is going to get worse before it gets better.
If you’re feeling horrified, terrified, lost, heart broken, infuriated, numb…anything but okay with what is happening, then you are right. Being okay with what is happening is the only wrong way to feel about it.
That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have gratitude for all sorts of things. Coffee. Good books. Honest reporting. The sun rising every day. Our loved ones. The brave people resisting ICE, creating networks, feeding neighbors, protesting…dying.
It also doesn’t mean we should shun joy—which is a powerful and vital form of resistance.
But we are here now. Many of us saw this coming and can see how bad it is. We are sad and mad that so many people are STILL just ignoring it—hoping it goes away. Expecting that history won’t do what it literally always f***ing does and re-f***ing-peat.
We are horrified and yet not at all surprised there are people cheering this on. Their own misery is only satisfied when others are hurting.
But the majority now are heartbroken, angry, awake. Fighting. There are many ways to resist. You don’t have to be loud on social media, or on the streets protesting, to resist fascism. There are a million ways to help. Find one that lets you be brave. Lets you feel like at least you’re doing something.
Don’t give up hope, but don’t be blinded by it either. This is as bad as you think it is.
My heart weeps for what the United States is going through. I’m enraged by the people letting it happen, and I’m grateful to know I’ve built a community of readers who feel like I do. Who my books resonate with and offer something to in these dark f***ing days.
Thank you for not being fascist f***s. I appreciate you.
